Pune, 10th May 2023: The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to medical courses, took place across the country on Sunday. However, the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has taken notice of the mistreatment of girls during the examination at the exam centers in Sangli and has ordered a report to be submitted by the NTA and the State Medical Education Department.

Instances of misbehavior towards students, particularly girls, during the NEET exam at various examination centers have been brought to light through media and social media across the nation. The State Women’s Commission has taken this matter seriously and strongly condemned such behavior towards girls. A letter has been sent to the NTA, requesting an inquiry into these incidents and the submission of a detailed report.

Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of the State Commission for Women, expressed concern over the mistreatment of students during the NEET examination conducted nationwide by the NTA. While precautions were taken to prevent cheating, it is essential to ensure that students are not subjected to humiliation. The practice of making students wear their clothes inside out and checking their undergarments is not only shameful but also highly reprehensible.

Serious questions arise regarding the instructions given to the officers who conducted these inspections. Were there any official directives or notices authorizing such intrusive searches? The concerned department must clarify whether this inspection method was deemed acceptable. The State Women’s Commission has urged the medical education department to promptly investigate the matter. They have also directed an inquiry into whether similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in the state, with a requirement to submit a report within two days.
