Market Yard, 14th April 2025: The season of the sweet and much-loved Alphonso mango, popularly known as Hapus from Konkan, is now at its peak, with supply significantly rising in Pune’s Market Yard. On Sunday (13th April), the market recorded an influx of nearly 6,000 to 6,500 crates of the fruit, a sharp increase from last week’s 3,000 to 4,000 crates.

Traders expect the supply to further increase in the coming days, which may lead to a continued decline in prices. Due to unseasonal weather conditions earlier this year, mango production in Konkan has suffered, with only around 60% of the usual yield available. The season also began later than expected, but supply is now catching up rapidly.

Compared to last week, prices have dropped by approximately 25% to 30%. Depending on quality, a crate of four to eight dozen mangoes is being sold for ₹1,500 to ₹4,500. Retail buyers are paying between ₹400 and ₹800 per dozen for high-quality ripe fruit.

“Mangoes from Konkan are now arriving in good numbers, leading to a price drop. This is the best time for consumers to buy Alphonso mangoes,” said a trader from Market Yard. “However, due to the delayed and reduced harvest, the season is expected to end earlier than usual—likely by mid-June instead of the typical 30th June conclusion.”

Meanwhile, supply of Alphonso mangoes from Karnataka has also increased slightly compared to last week but remains lower than usual levels. On Sunday, around 10,000 crates of 2-dozen-sized mangoes arrived, with only 40 to 50 traditional wooden crates being delivered.

Traders further informed that post 20th April, supply from Karnataka is expected to rise. Presently, wholesale prices for semi-ripe mangoes in three to four dozen crates range from ₹1,200 to ₹1,800, while the Payari variety is fetching between ₹120 to ₹150 per kilogram.
