Heatwave Alert In Pune: Health Department Urges Precautions Amid Rising Temperatures

Pune, 10th March 2025: With temperatures soaring since February, Pune residents are bracing for an intense summer. The Public Health Department has urged people, especially children, the elderly, and pregnant women, to take necessary precautions to prevent heatstroke as the temperature crossed 40°C in the first week of March. Citizens have been advised to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary.
Every year, hundreds of people suffer from heatstroke, experiencing severe headaches, vomiting, breathing difficulties, dizziness, and even unconsciousness. In 2023, a total of 3,199 cases of heatstroke were recorded, resulting in 14 deaths. In 2024, 347 cases were reported, with one fatality. This year, four cases have already been registered in February, as the scorching heat grips both the city and surrounding districts.
Those most affected by extreme heat include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, laborers, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney disorders.
Essential Precautions to Avoid Heatstroke:
– Stay hydrated with clean and sufficient water
– Wear light, loose-fitting clothes
– Stay in cool or shaded areas during peak afternoon heat
– Cover your head and face while stepping out
– Eat fruits and vegetables to maintain hydration
– Take a cool shower to regulate body temperature
What To Avoid:
– Avoid going outdoors between 11 am and 4 pm
– Refrain from wearing dark, thick clothing
– Avoid strenuous physical activities during peak heat hours
– Limit consumption of carbonated drinks, soda, and alcohol
Recognizing Signs of Heat-Related Illness:
– Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating, low blood pressure, weakness, rapid heartbeat
– Dehydration: Dry mouth, fatigue, reduced urination
– Heatstroke: Severe headache, vomiting, dizziness, unconsciousness
As Pune continues to experience rising temperatures, residents are urged to stay cautious and seek immediate medical attention if any symptoms of heat-related illnesses appear.
