Iconic Deccan Queen Express Celebrates 93 Glorious Years Connecting Pune and Mumbai

Pune, 1st June 2023: Celebrations filled the air at Pune railway station as the iconic Deccan Queen Express marked its 93rd birthday on Thursday. Passengers, who have developed a special bond with this train over the years, organized a grand celebration to honor their beloved queen.

The Railway Pravasi Group took the initiative to organize this event, transforming the station into a festive hub adorned with colorful rangoli and flowers. The Deccan Queen locomotives were also beautifully decorated with flowers, adding to the jubilant atmosphere. A band played lively tunes to welcome the train and its passengers.

Chandrakant Patil, the Guardian Minister, had the honor of cutting the birthday cake, symbolizing the cherished connection between the passengers and the train. Patil inspected the train and interacted with the passengers, sharing in the joyous occasion. The train’s driver was also honored during the celebration. Notable attendees included Harsha Shah, President of the Railway Pravasi Group, and railway officials.

The launch of the Deccan Queen on 1st June 1930 marked a significant milestone in the history of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which eventually became the Central Railway. The introduction of this deluxe train between Pune and Mumbai was a groundbreaking move, connecting two major cities in Maharashtra. The train, aptly named after Pune, also known as the “Queen of the Deccan,” set a new standard in rail travel.

The festivities at Pune railway station showcased the enduring legacy of the Deccan Queen and the deep affection passengers hold for this remarkable train. As it continues to traverse the picturesque route between Pune and Mumbai, the Deccan Queen remains an emblem of history, elegance, and the enduring spirit of rail travel.
