Indian Army Empowers Women as Guides at Pune’s Southern Command War Memorial

Pune, 7th March 2025: At the Southern Command War Memorial in Pune, the Indian Army is leading the way in challenging traditional gender roles and promoting women’s empowerment through its innovative guided tour program. The four female guides, each from a distinct military background, are not just narrators of history but powerful symbols of evolving societal norms in India.
Vijaya Sakpal, a Veer Nari; Sharda Umbarkar, the wife of an Indian Army veteran; and Kalyani Bhosale and Mukta Chavan, wives of serving Army soldiers, are breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated space. By stepping into these roles, they are actively dismantling stereotypes surrounding women’s participation in public and historical narratives.
These women have been rigorously trained to provide in-depth tours of both the Southern Command War Memorial and the Southern Command Museum, offering visitors insights into pre- and post-independence wars, military equipment, and national sacrifices. Their training goes beyond standard tour guide requirements, encompassing military history, public speaking, and a thorough understanding of the memorial’s exhibits. This preparation has not only enhanced their professional skills but also boosted their confidence and self-reliance.
Through stable employment and competitive wages, the Indian Army is fostering financial independence among these women. This economic empowerment extends beyond their personal growth, influencing their families and communities to recognize and appreciate women’s professional contributions.
The presence of female guides also serves as an inspiration for young girls and women visiting the memorial. Seeing women confidently narrate military history and engage with complex historical narratives challenges conventional perceptions and encourages future generations to explore diverse career opportunities.
Diversity in storytelling is known to enrich visitor experiences, and these women bring unique perspectives that add depth, empathy, and nuance to the memorial’s historical accounts. Through this initiative, the Southern Command War Memorial is not just preserving military history but also playing an active role in social transformation and women’s empowerment in India.
