Indian Railways Food Quality: Rs 13.2 Crore in Fines Imposed in 2024–25
New Delhi, 9th August 2025: Indian Railways serves an average of 16.5 lakh meals daily across its network through catering facilities at stations, including Jan Ahaar, refreshment rooms, food plazas, fast food units, and catering or vending stalls. Affordable and economical meals are also provided through static units and dedicated service counters on platforms.
According to official data, the average number of grievances related to food quality stands at about 46 per day, accounting for 0.003% of the total meals served. In 2024–25, penalties amounting to ₹13.2 crore were imposed in response to complaints received.
Railways stated that measures are regularly implemented to ensure uninterrupted catering services and improve quality. Representations, suggestions, and complaints from passengers, catering associations, elected representatives, and other stakeholders are examined on merit, with necessary action taken accordingly.
Complaints are monitored continuously to enhance passenger services across stations.
