Indian Railways Operates Over 43,000 Special Train Trips in 2025 to Manage Festive and Seasonal Rush
New Delhi, 26th December2025: Indian Railways operated more than 43,000 special train trips during 2025 to cater to increased passenger demand during major religious events and peak travel seasons across the country, according to official data.
One of the largest operations was undertaken for Maha Kumbh 2025, during which 17,340 special train trips were run between 13 January and 28 February 2025 to facilitate large-scale movement of pilgrims. The operation covered multiple routes and regions to ensure connectivity to the Kumbh area.
For Holi 2025, observed between 1 March and 22 March, Indian Railways operated 1,144 special train trips, almost double the number run during the corresponding period in 2024, to manage the festive travel rush.
During the Summer travel season of 2025, from 1 April to 30 June, a total of 12,417 Summer Special train trips were operated to accommodate vacation-related travel across long-distance routes.
Special arrangements were also made for Chhath Puja 2025, with 12,383 special train trips operated between 1 October and 30 November 2025, reflecting a significant increase compared to the previous year’s operations for the festival.
The 2025 special train operations followed extensive arrangements made in 2024. During Aastha Special services conducted from 30 January to 11 March 2024, Indian Railways operated 326 special circular train trips for pilgrims. For Holi 2024, held between 12 March and 2 April, 604 special train trips were run.
In the Summer season of 2024, Indian Railways operated 12,919 Summer Special train trips, while Chhath Puja 2024 saw 7,990 special train trips operated between 1 October and 31 December.
The data highlights the scale of special train operations undertaken by Indian Railways across consecutive years to manage passenger movement during periods of high demand.
