IPL 2023: Gujarat Wins By Six Wickets Against Banglore; Now With This Win, MI Secures Position In Playoffs

Bangalore, 21st May 2023: Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB) was under a lot of pressure to win the match against Gujarat Titans (GT) after Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Gujarat Titans then chased down Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 198-run challenge for four wickets in 19.1 overs in the 70th match of the season at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Shubhman Gill hit eight sixes and five fours in an innings of 104 runs. He was well supported by Vijay Shankar scoring 53 runs. Both of them put on a partnership of 123 runs for the second wicket.

With this win, Gujarat secured their 10th win in the league stage. They are now at the top position with 20 points. RCB’s loss reduced them to 14 points. This benefited Mumbai Indians. They earned 16 points by defeating Hyderabad with a valuable two points. Now they are in fourth place with 16 points. They will now play an eliminator match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Due to the rain, everything was in a state of flux. But Virat Kohli once again showed his fighting spirit in this pressure match. He scored a century of 101 runs to take RCB to 197 runs. After Virat, Faf du Plessis scored the highest 28 runs for RCB.

This was Virat Kohli’s seventh century in the IPL. Virat Kohli also surpassed Chris Gayle’s record for most centuries in IPL history. This is Virat’s second consecutive century in this season. Virat Kohli became the second player after Shikhar Dhawan and Jos Buttler to achieve such feat in IPL.

Gujarat Titans won the toss and decided to bowl first. RCB got off to a stumbling start in the first few overs of the powerplay in a match that started after a rain interruption. But then Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis increased the run rate. They scored 60 runs in the first six overs. But after the power play, Faf du Plessis was dismissed for 28 runs.

After du Plessis was dismissed, Virat Kohli took charge of the innings. But he was supported by Maxwell for 11 runs. Mahipal Lomror was also returned to the pavilion after making one run. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli had completed his half-century.

After RCB were 85 for three, Virat put on a great partnership with Michael Bracewell for the fourth wicket. Bracewell also played his part in 47 runs with 26 off 16 balls. But this pair was broken by Shami. Yash Dayal then dismissed Dinesh Karthik on a zero.

As each RCB batsman returned to the pavilion, Virat Kohli was marching towards his century. He was hitting aggressively. Anuj Rawat, who came to support him, scored an unbeaten 23 off 13 balls, while Virat Kohli hit 13 fours and one six on an unbeaten 101 off 61 balls. Finally, Anuj and Virat made a partnership of 64 runs for the sixth wicket and took RCB to 197 runs in 20 overs.

Chasing the 198-run challenge set by RCB, Gujarat struck first in the power play. Opener Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed for 12 runs. He was dismissed by Mohammad Siraj. But after that, openers Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar started to attack the RCB bowlers. Finally, Shubman Gill hit a six on a free hit to complete his century, Gujarat’s victory and Mumbai’s play-off ticket.
