Is the Earth Headed for a Possible ‘Internet Apocalypse’?
Kolkata, 17th July, 2023: The Earth would witness a rare phenomenon in the next two years known as an internet apocalypse, that indicates widespread internet outage, according to the Washington Post. Due to the increased panic, NASA has been forced to confirm this news, however, the space agency has not issued any warnings regarding this rare phenomenon.
A global internet outage could go on for months at end resulting from a major solar storm in the year 2025, according to the study 2021 study titled “Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse”.
The possibility of an Internet Apocalypse has taken social media by storm, with several netizens expressing their concern and curiosity. In response to this, NASA has prominently stated that while the possibility of a solar storm hitting Earth is low, effects on global connectivity can very much be present.
In an unpublished study titled “Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse,” Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi, a computer science professor at the University of California, raises worries about the potential impact of solar superstorms. It is crucial to emphasise, however, that her paper has not yet been subjected to the rigorous process of peer review or been published in a scientific publication.
Ms. Jyothi appreciates the unexpected attention her piece has garnered, her voice tinged with remorse. While catastrophic solar storms creating an internet apocalypse were not the primary focus of her research, they did play a part.
The effects of major solar storms on electric grids and communication systems are well documented, so it is “good to be wary and perform continuous monitoring and evaluation of the sun-Earth system and the heliospheric system,” Vishal Upendran, who is a research associate at the Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory in California, told Space.com.
