Pune, 1st June 2025: IIT Bombay continues to dominate as the top choice for India’s highest JEE Advanced rankers. Here’s a detailed analysis of cutoff scores, branch-wise trends, and competition levels for 2025 admissions.

When it comes to ranking India’s IITs, many factors are considered — including faculty quality, infrastructure, placement records, and research output. However, one of the most reliable indicators of an IIT’s true standing is the preference shown by top JEE Advanced rank holders. And by that measure, IIT Bombay remains the clear front-runner.

IIT Bombay: The Top Choice Among JEE Advanced Toppers

Among all IITs, the top 100 JEE Advanced rankers are often considered the best representation of student choices. Forty years ago, IIT Kharagpur — India’s oldest IIT — was the most sought-after destination. However, in a dramatic shift, IIT Kharagpur failed to attract even a single top 100 ranker in 2024.

For some time, IIT Kanpur held the leadership position, attracting many of India’s brightest students. But for the past two decades, IIT Bombay has emerged as the undisputed leader, becoming the first preference for most top-performing JEE aspirants.

2024 Data Highlights IIT Bombay’s Dominance

In 2024, 72 out of the top 100 JEE Advanced rankers chose IIT Bombay, while the remaining 22 IITs together attracted only 28 students from this elite group. This consistent trend over the past decade firmly establishes IIT Bombay as the first choice for India’s top engineering talent.

IIT Bombay Computer Science Cutoff in 2024

Admission into IIT Bombay’s prestigious Computer Science program has become more competitive than ever. In 2024, students with an All India Rank (AIR) of 69 or lower could not secure a seat in this flagship branch.

“This year’s exam posed an even greater challenge: beyond the complexity of problems, the pattern and language added to the difficulty. Nearly 47% of the paper consisted of numerical value type questions, leaving no room for partial credit — even a 0.1% error resulted in zero marks. Unlike multiple-choice questions where options can offer some guidance, these numerical questions demanded absolute precision,” said Lalit Kumar, Founder of Prime Academy Pune.

Expected JEE Advanced 2025 Cutoff for IIT Bombay (Branch-Wise)

With official results for JEE Advanced 2025 expected on June 2, early estimates suggest the following expected cutoff scores for IIT Bombay admissions:

  • Computer Science (B.Tech): Above 270 out of 360
  • Electrical Engineering: Around 220 marks
  • Mechanical Engineering: Approximately 170 marks
  • BS in Chemistry (last closing branch in 2024): Closed at AIR 7430

For 2025, even getting admission into any branch at IIT Bombay may require a minimum score of 120+ marks.

Students Exploring Alternate Options

“Students who are clear about the streams they want to pursue — especially Computer Science — often prefer NITs, IIITs, or BITS if they are unable to secure their desired branch at an IIT,” said D.C. Pandey, HOD, Physics, Prime Academy Pune.
