JEE Main 2020: Expert tips for revision

Share this News:

17 December 2019- The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2020 for admission to IITs, NITs as well as other CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions) in two phases. The first phase will be from 6th January 2020 to 11th January 2020 while the second phase will be from 3rd April 2020 to 9th April 2020. The exam pattern has also been changed by NTA this year and numerical type long-form questions are added to MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) list.

As less than a month is left for the examination, here are some tips for the last moment preparation and revision.

Firstly, students are advised not to start with any new books as very less time is left. This time should be utilised to revise the syllabus already covered and think about techniques of time management, develop short cuts, memorize formulae etc.

Suggested Books

Some of the books that can be referred by the students include Arihant Publication for integral calculus, algebra and differential; HC Verma for Physics; MS Chauhan for Organic Chemistry and P Bahadur for Numerical Chemistry. Some of the other important books are RD Sharma (Objective Mathematics), HC Verma (Concept of physics) and Ajay Kumar and Ravi Prakash (Complete mathematics).

Important Topics

Some of the important topics for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry that are asked in JEE MAIN exam are:

  • PHYSICS: Gravitation, Kinematics, Fluids, Waves and Sound, Heat and Thermodynamics, Capacitors and Electrostatics, Electromagnetic Induction, Magnetics and Optics and Modern Physics.
  • CHEMISTRY: Chemical Bonding and Coordination Chemistry in Inorganic Chemistry; Mole Concept, Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium, Electrochemistry in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
  • MATHEMATICS: Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Vectors, Matrices, Probability in Algebra; Parabola, Hyperbola, Circle in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Definite Integral, Continuity and Differentiability, Limits, Application of Derivatives in Calculus.

Time Management

Time management is another main aspect to be looked after by the students preparing for JEE Main. You should divide your time equally between the three subjects (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) and start with the revision. Prepare a time- table and stick to it. Remember that this time is very crucial and it will not come back.

Work on Weakness

The last month should also be used for working on the weaknesses and increasing speed and accuracy as they are the key to success. Focusing on weaker areas will also help in improving concepts and thus, building up confidence.

Mock Test

Students should try taking mock tests and go through the content-based lectures by IIT professors/subject experts in order to develop exam temperament. This will also prepare you for managing time in the final exam and give you a fair idea of the pattern of questions. Solve the sample papers given on JEE Main official website. This will help in understanding the level of questions that are asked in the exam. Carefully notice your mistakes and work on them and try not to repeat them.

Methodology

The correct approach for preparation is to stick to one source of information rather than referring to multiple books. The last few weeks should be used to brush up through notes and look at the important questions. Stick to a single system of preparation. Preparing a list of important notes and formulae is also helpful for last-minute lookup. A selective study should be avoided and all the topics of the syllabus should be given importance as questions can be asked from any topic.

Time and Break

Spending more time on preparation would not guarantee good rank. But the quality of time spent on studies would make the difference. Thus, students should take short breaks between study sessions in order to freshen up their mind and start studying after the decided break time.

Tips for Exam Day

  • Students are advised to attempt all numerical based questions first as there is less risk in them. They do not have any negative marking.
  • Start with the easy questions first and leave the difficult ones for the last.
  • Keeping a check on time is the most important thing. Try to divide your time according to the need of the questions.
  • Do not panic and attempt the paper with a calm mind.
  • Use your analytical mind to solve the questions.

Staying focused and having a positive attitude are equally important. Staying relaxed and having a good sleep is the key to a positive mind. Thus, students are advised to give their best without stressing much about the result. Stay calm and confident. All the best!
