Kamal Haasan Criticizes PM Modi Over Hindi Imposition Debate

New Delhi, 5th March 2025: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of attempting to impose Hindi as a national language.
Haasan, founder of the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), expressed his concerns during a public statement, emphasizing that such efforts undermine India’s linguistic diversity and federal structure.
Haasan stated, “India’s unity lies in its diversity. Imposing one language over others will disrupt this balance.”
He compared the potential backlash to the massive protests seen during the Jallikattu movement in Tamil Nadu, warning that the resistance to Hindi imposition could be even larger.
The controversy stems from ongoing debates about promoting Hindi as a unifying language across India. Critics argue this move marginalizes regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.
Haasan reiterated his party’s stance on protecting Tamil culture and language, urging the central government to respect linguistic pluralism.
This is not the first time Haasan has voiced opposition to Hindi imposition. In 2019, he made similar remarks following Home Minister Amit Shah’s advocacy for a common language.
His comments have reignited discussions on India’s linguistic policies and their impact on regional identities.
