Karan Johar Opens Up About Impact of ‘Movie Mafia’ Label on His Mother’s Mental Health

Mumbai, 9th August 2023: Karan Johar has recently discussed the label of ‘movie mafia’, a term frequently associated with him by Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut. During a recent interview, Karan shared his experiences of facing substantial criticism over the past few years, highlighting its adverse impact on his mother, Hiroo Johar.
Over the past three years, I experienced a notable amount of hostility directed towards me, and this took a significant toll on my mother. I witnessed her emotional distress due to her exposure to television broadcasts and online content. She was deeply affected by the negative atmosphere, constantly bombarded by TV hosts vehemently condemning me and uttering extremely negative remarks. Similarly, there were individuals echoing the same sentiments on Twitter and other social platforms,” Karan Johar revealed while speaking with Sucharita Tyagi.
Karan refrained from naming anyone directly and added, “At that time, my foremost responsibility was to remain resilient, not just for my well-being, but also for the sake of my mother. It felt as though my vulnerabilities were exposed. Everything has been laid bare. What’s left to conceal? Whom to combat? (I have nothing left to hide) Everyone has seemingly invaded my life, making assumptions without understanding the person I am. They’ve formed a perception of me as part of a supposed ‘mafia’ without comprehending the daily struggles of a producer trying to assemble a cast.”
These statements from Karan Johar surfaced shortly after Kangana Ranaut criticized him for his recent release, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” and called for his retirement from the film industry. On her Instagram stories, Kangana expressed, “Karan Johar, it’s disgraceful to see you repeatedly produce the same film… self-proclaiming yourself as the torchbearer of Indian cinema while consistently regressing it… Please don’t squander resources, as the industry is going through tough times. Step back now and allow young filmmakers to create fresh and revolutionary films.”
Presently, Karan Johar is basking in the success of his recently released directorial venture, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.” The movie features leading actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, along with veteran performers such as Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan. The ensemble also features Tota Roy Chowdhury, Ronit Roy, Saswata Chatterjee, Karmveer Choudhary, and Kshitee Jog in supporting roles. The film has garnered predominantly positive reviews and has achieved over Rs 100 crore in domestic box office collections.
