Pune, 15th April 2025: In a bid to streamline the construction process and minimize traffic disruptions once operational, authorities are set to conduct a comprehensive traffic study at over 25 critical junctions along four proposed Metro routes in the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR).

The study, which will be jointly carried out by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maha Metro, will focus on the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Kharadi, Hadapsar-Loni, Hadapsar-Saswad Road, and Nal Stop-Warje (Manikbaug) corridors. These four routes, which are expected to receive approval from the central government in the coming months, will span more than 48 kilometers and pass through several key traffic junctions in the city.

PMC officials emphasized the importance of conducting this study to avoid traffic congestion and ensure smoother road usage during and after the Metro’s construction. “When undertaking large-scale projects like the Metro, it’s crucial to approach it with careful planning and coordination.

The administration is looking to hire an agency to study the traffic flow and status of the key intersections. Based on their findings, the agency will propose strategies to mitigate traffic challenges during the construction phase,” an official explained.

The proposed Metro routes will impact major roads, including the Pune-Solapur and Pune-Saswad-Pandharpur highways, especially the stretch from Hadapsar to Loni and from Hadapsar to Saswad Road. Additionally, the Nal Stop to Warje (Manikbaug) route will cover busy chowks such as Karve Putala, Ambedkar Chowk, and Warje Chowk on Karve Road. These intersections, among others, will be part of the traffic study.

Currently, two Metro routes in Pune, from PCMC to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi, are operational, covering 33 kilometers. The Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar line, which stretches across 23 kilometers, is also in the final stages of construction.

Commuters have often raised concerns over the traffic disruptions caused by ongoing Metro work. Many feel that better planning could help alleviate these issues. “Metro construction often leads to traffic jams, and it feels like there’s a lack of proper coordination. Hopefully, the traffic study will help address these problems,” said a daily commuter.
