Kothrud-Warje Flyover Project Under Review Due To Pune Metro Design Challenges

Pune, 1st September 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is reevaluating its plans for a proposed flyover connecting Warje and Kothrud, as well as an elevated road on a hill, due to potential interference with the metro design. The PMC has directed its consulting team to formulate a revised project plan, exploring alternative options.

Initially, the PMC had proposed the construction of a flyover and an elevated road over the hill to facilitate connectivity between Warje and Kothrud. For this purpose, the Municipal Corporation had enlisted the services of a consulting firm, which subsequently submitted a comprehensive project plan for consideration.

According to the original proposal, a flyover was planned at Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk, with the flyover and elevated road intersecting. However, this configuration raised concerns about its impact on the metro design. Consequently, the Municipal Corporation’s Road Department has instructed the consultant to rework the plan. The pivotal Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk on Karve Road, where five roads converge, had been earmarked for the flyover. Still, the height of this structure may pose challenges to the metro design. To address this issue, the municipal administration has chosen to reject the consultant’s initial report, opting instead for improvements.

The Road Department’s Chief Engineer, V. G. Kulkarni, disclosed that a new design incorporating a level separator (grade separator) or alternative solutions will be developed. A metro line project from Paud Phata to Manikbagh via Karve Road has already secured approval from the Municipal Corporation and is now awaiting the State Government’s endorsement. Concurrently, a road proposal in the development plan aims to link the Warje and Kothrud areas with a road near the Vandevi temple, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion on Karve Road.
