Pune, 13th April 2022: For the first time since the establishment of Pune Market Yard, lemon has got such a high price. At present, a 15 to 20 kg sack of good quality lemons fetches a hefty price of Rs 3,500 in the wholesale market. So, in the retail market, one lemon is available for Rs 10 to 20.

Rohan Jadhav, a lemon trader and director of Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Aadte Association informed that, till one and a half months ago, three to four thousand sacks of lemons were arriving in the market daily. However, at present, this arrival decreased by fifty per cent. The price has gone up by almost Rs 1000 per sack. As per the quality, some lemon sacks are getting a price of Rs 2500.

Lemons enter the market from the rural areas of Ahmednagar, Solapur and Pune districts and also from other states. However, this year, the arrival of commercial goods from Hyderabad and Chennai is also increasing.

About 40-45% of the country’s lemons are supplied from Eluru Bazaar in Andhra Pradesh. Guntur in Tirupati district also has an adequate supply of lemons. The soil in Andhra Pradesh is good for lemon production. It does not need to be watered frequently. Sunlight is very important for the production of lemon. Although lemons are arriving in Pune from Andhra Pradesh this year, the quantity is much less than every year, the traders said.

Shortage to continue till June?

Currently, lemon is in high demand from hotels and juice centres. Therefore, the situation is expected to remain the same till June.
