Pune, 5th April 2024: In a significant move to clamp down on illegal alcohol sales and ensure compliance with election norms, Pune District Collector and District Election Officer Dr Suhas Diwase has announced comprehensive monitoring in the district.

Speaking to Punekar News, Dr Diwase detailed the district’s efforts to scrutinize every bank transaction related to liquor sales to clubs, restaurants, and individuals, in collaboration with the excise department and other relevant authorities.

The initiative targets every establishment in Pune, from clubs and bars to wineshops, placing their alcohol purchase orders under close surveillance. “Any discrepancy detected in the purchase volumes of alcohol will prompt immediate action,” Dr Diwase stated, emphasizing the district’s commitment to maintaining strict regulatory compliance.

The crackdown is part of a broader action plan developed in response to the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, aiming to prevent illegal alcohol distribution and transportation. The Police and excise department has already undertaken numerous raids and imposed penalties on establishments found violating stipulated time limits for the sale of liquor. Our efforts are geared towards sealing illegal establishments dealing in liquor to ensure a fair and lawful election process, he added.

To further enforce the regulation, the sale of alcohol will be banned on May 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and June 4th, coinciding with the polling and vote counting days across various constituencies in Pune. The Lok Sabha elections are set to take place on May 7th in the Baramati constituency, while Shirur, Pune, and Maval will follow on May 13th.
