Lonavala: Massive Traffic Jam On Pune-Mumbai Expressway As Weekend Tourists Return

Lonavala, 21st May 2023: Lonavala witnessed a major traffic jam at the Khandala Ghat section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Sunday as a surge of tourists from Mumbai embarked on their return journey after a two-day holiday.

In recent weeks, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been plagued by substantial traffic jams, especially on weekends and consecutive holidays. The queues of vehicles have extended up to seven to eight kilometers, causing significant inconvenience for vacationers heading out for leisure trips. Fridays and Saturdays typically experience heavy traffic congestion on the route towards Pune, while Sundays encounter traffic build-up on the Mumbai-bound route.

To alleviate the traffic congestion on Fridays and Saturdays, authorities have implemented a strategy of briefly blocking the road near the Khandala tunnel before reopening all six lanes. However, this measure has led to congestion on the route towards Mumbai. Consequently, on Sundays, as travelers make their way back from their weekend getaways, both routes become congested, resulting in a challenging situation for motorists navigating the entire ghat area.

Efforts are underway to address the recurring traffic issues on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, particularly during peak travel times.
