Lonavla: Rape Case Registered Against Senior Congress Leader’s Brother

Pune, 2 March 2021: The brother of a senior Congress leader in Mumbai has been arrested on rape charges. The name of the accused is Sunit Waghmare, who is a builder and former Congress corporator.

Sunit is the brother of Congress spokesperson Raju Waghmare. A case was registered against Sunit Waghmare at Bhoiwada police station in Mumbai. However, the incident took place at a hotel in Lonavla and the case has been now registered at the Lonavla city police station.

According to police, Sunit promised to give the 28-year-old woman a job and they turned friends after sending a request on Facebook. He later took her mobile number and then they started chatting on WhatsApp and phone calls.

According to police, a few days later, Sunit told the victim that he loved her. And told he was married but was not happy with his wife. He promised to soon divorce his wife and marry the victim. He was getting divorced and in this regard, a lawyer was coming to meet him. So he took the victim to a hotel in Lonavala for discussing the divorce case in November 2019. In her complaint, the victim said that Sunit sexually assaulted her. She also said that the two had been in a ‘live-in relationship’ for a few days.

Sunit has been arrested and remanded in police custody till March 4.
