Maharashtra Approves Rs 100 Crore for Cardiac Cath Labs in Pune, Jalna, Gadchiroli and Kolhapur
Pune, 15th February 2026: In a major boost to public healthcare infrastructure, the Maharashtra Public Health Department has approved the establishment of cardiac catheterisation laboratories (Cath Labs) in four districts — Pune, Jalna, Gadchiroli and Kolhapur. The state government has sanctioned a total fund of ₹100 crore for the project.
In Pune, the Cath Lab will be set up at the Aundh District Hospital. The facility is expected to provide significant relief to patients suffering from heart ailments, particularly those requiring emergency interventions.
Under the project, advanced cardiac procedures such as angiography and angioplasty will be provided free of cost at government hospitals. In addition, facilities will be available for heart valve treatment and implantation of pacemakers used to regulate irregular heart rhythms.
Speaking on the development, District Surgeon Dr Nagnath Yampalle said that cases of heart disease and vascular disorders are rising rapidly in the state. Timely diagnosis and treatment are critical for such patients, and the Cath Lab at Aundh District Hospital will play a vital role in addressing this growing health concern.
The project will be implemented through the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model. It will cover civil infrastructure development, mechanical and electrical works, plumbing design, procurement and installation of advanced medical equipment, testing, storage, distribution and overall supply chain management.
Until now, critically ill cardiac patients often had to rely on private hospitals for procedures like angiography and angioplasty. This frequently led to delays in treatment, along with financial strain and mental stress for families. Taking this into consideration, the state government decided to establish Cath Labs at district hospitals to ensure timely and affordable treatment.
The implementation will be carried out in coordination with the District Surgeon, the Directorate of Health Services, the Commissionerate of Health Services and the Public Health Department. Officials said the new facilities will enable doctors to quickly detect blockages in coronary arteries and provide immediate treatment. Access to such care during the crucial “golden hour” is expected to help save many lives.
Once operational, the Cath Labs will strengthen district-level government hospitals and enhance the quality of cardiac care available to economically weaker sections at minimal cost.
