Pune, 28th October 2024: The tension surrounding BJP candidate Chandrakant Patil’s campaign in the Kothrud Assembly Constituency has eased as his potential rival, Amol Balwadkar, withdrew from the race. Balwadkar, who was initially expected to challenge Patil by running as an independent candidate, has now pledged his full support to ensure Patil’s victory with a significant majority.
The decision to withdraw was made after a meeting between Chandrakant Patil and Balwadkar earlier today. Speaking on the matter, Balwadkar confirmed his decision to stand down and actively campaign for Patil, emphasizing his commitment to securing Patil’s success in the upcoming elections.
Initial Rebellion
Amol Balwadkar had expressed interest in contesting the elections from the Kothrud constituency. However, with the BJP re-nominating Chandrakant Patil as its candidate in the first list, speculation grew that Balwadkar would run as an independent candidate. Tensions escalated when Balwadkar publicly criticized Patil and hinted at a rebellion within the Kothrud constituency.
Following these events, BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule met with Balwadkar to persuade him to reconsider his stance. However, at that time, Balwadkar remained firm, stating, “Bawankule Saheb visited me, and while he tried to convince me, I expressed my desire to contest the elections. I am still optimistic about getting the nomination.” These comments left the BJP leadership concerned about a potential split in their voter base in Kothrud.
Change of Heart
In a significant turnaround, Balwadkar has now assured his complete support to Chandrakant Patil, stating that it is his responsibility to ensure Patil’s victory with a large majority. This decision marks the resolution of a major internal conflict within the BJP in Kothrud, bringing relief to Patil and the party ahead of the elections.
Raid Controversy
The political atmosphere had further intensified when the Income Tax department raided the residence of Balwadkar’s relative Abhijit Katke, a well-known wrestler. Speculation arose that the raid was linked to Balwadkar’s criticism of Patil. Balwadkar responded by expressing his concern over the raid, saying, “Raiding the home of someone who has made Maharashtra and the country proud is troubling.” However, despite the controversy, Balwadkar has now decided to step back from contesting and focus on supporting Patil.
“Nation First” – Balwadkar’s Statement
In a statement announcing his withdrawal, Balwadkar reaffirmed his commitment to the BJP’s principles of public service. “The Bharatiya Janata Party has always believed in putting the nation first, and I am proud to be a part of this party. While I had initially expressed my desire to contest from Kothrud to serve the people, the party has chosen Chandrakant Patil as its candidate. Although we had some differences, they have been resolved with the help of our respected Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis,” he said.
Balwadkar also emphasized that his decision was made after consulting with his supporters and well-wishers in Kothrud. “I have always valued the opinions of the people, and I will continue to work tirelessly for their welfare,” he added, vowing to support Patil’s campaign and help the BJP secure victory in Kothrud.
With Balwadkar’s withdrawal, Chandrakant Patil’s position in Kothrud now appears more secure, raising the BJP’s confidence in retaining the seat.
