Mumbai, 13th August 2025: The Maharashtra cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has sanctioned the recruitment of 15,631 constables — including 25 bandsmen — for the state police force, aiming to fill longstanding vacancies across various units. The selection process will be conducted through an Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) written examination.

The approved recruitment plan covers 12,399 police constable posts, 234 police drivers, 2,393 armed police constables, and 580 prison constables.
The move follows strong observations made in July by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, which criticised the state government for neglecting law and order despite having funds for other administrative functions. The bench directed the state to frame a revised policy within three months to fill both vacant and additional police positions in Nagpur and elsewhere in Maharashtra. It also instructed the home department to file a detailed affidavit outlining the measures taken to address the shortage of personnel.

In a one-time relaxation, candidates who had crossed the prescribed age limit for these posts in 2022 or 2023 will be allowed to apply for this recruitment cycle.

Officials said the recruitment process will be managed at the district level. Applicants will undergo a series of physical tests followed by the OMR-based written exam. Special teams will oversee the screening and assessment to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process.
