Pune, 5th October 2025: The Maharashtra School Education Department has instructed all government, zilla parishad, municipal, and private aided and unaided schools across the state to establish formal alumni associations. The move aims to strengthen connections between former students and their schools while encouraging alumni to contribute towards educational and infrastructural development.

The directive, issued on Wednesday by Deputy Secretary Tushar Mahajan, highlights that alumni networks should take an active role in improving school facilities, supporting student learning, and providing mentorship. According to the circular, the headmaster or principal of each institution will serve as the secretary of the alumni association.

Mahajan stated in the order, “Every school should organise at least two meetings of the alumni association each year and host an annual alumni meet or cultural event. The associations are expected to mobilise funds for infrastructure, create scholarship schemes, and assist in career guidance, competitive exam preparation, and extracurricular initiatives.”

Educators across the state have welcomed the step. “Many former students want to contribute to their old schools but lack a proper channel. With an official alumni association, they can directly help improve infrastructure, mentor students, and support school activities,” said Sangita Patil, a secondary school teacher from Pune.

The department noted that numerous alumni from Maharashtra’s schools now occupy key positions in various fields yet continue to hold an emotional connection to their institutions. “This initiative ensures that emotional connection is transformed into meaningful action for the growth of schools and students,” Mahajan said.
