Maharashtra Govt to Launch App-Based Taxi, Rickshaw, and E-Bike Services for Employment Generation
Mumbai, 29th July 2025: In a move aimed at tackling unemployment and streamlining public transport, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the state government is preparing to launch an app-based mobility service featuring rickshaws, taxis, and e-bikes. The initiative is expected to generate substantial job opportunities for local youth, especially from the Marathi community.
Speaking at a press interaction on Monday, Sarnaik revealed that the new service will be developed in collaboration with the transport department and private partners. “We are in the final stages of developing the app, and discussions are ongoing with firms such as the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and Mitra to ensure a smooth and transparent rollout,” he said.
Names under consideration for the app include Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, and Maha-Go. The final name will be chosen with the approval of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Sarnaik confirmed. “Once the chief minister and both deputy chief ministers give their nod, the app will go live,” he said.
The minister emphasized that the app will follow the Centre’s recently issued aggregator policy, ensuring that all regulatory standards are met. “We are designing the platform to meet the highest standards of transparency and efficiency. This will not only create a better commuting experience but also boost self-employment among our youth,” Sarnaik added.
To support aspiring drivers, financial assistance will be extended through Mumbai Bank. Its president, MLA Praveen Darekar, stated that loans for vehicle purchases will be offered at a 10% interest rate. “To make the scheme even more accessible, cooperative financial institutions will provide an 11% interest subsidy—effectively making the loans interest-free,” Darekar explained.
A final review meeting is scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya, where government officials, technical experts, and app developers will finalize the platform’s design and features.
The upcoming service is being seen as Maharashtra’s direct answer to existing private aggregators, with a specific focus on employment creation and digital governance in transport.
