Maharashtra: Lack of Awareness Threatens Admission Process for BBA, BMS, and BCA Courses

Pune, 3rd April 2024: The Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell is set to administer the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to Bachelor of Management (BBA, BMS) and Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) courses from May 27 to 29. However, concerns loom over the lack of awareness among students and parents regarding this crucial entrance examination, potentially jeopardizing the admissions process. Consequently, authorities are mulling over an extension for registration to mitigate the impact of the insufficient awareness.
With over one lakh seats available for BBA, BMS, and BCA courses statewide, these programs fall under the purview of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), endowing them with professional status. AICTE approval is deemed mandatory for the accreditation of these courses. In light of these regulations, the state-level CET, facilitated by the CET Cell, will serve as the gateway for admissions to these degree programs. Without CET scores, students will be ineligible for admission. The CET is scheduled to take place from May 27 to 29, and the registration process has already commenced, with a deadline set for April 11 for application submission.
Dr. Shamkant Deshmukh, Vice Principal of Modern College, underscored the popularity of courses like BBA and BCA, citing the promising employment prospects associated with these degrees. Historically, admissions to these courses were based on merit at the college level. However, starting this year, admissions will be contingent upon CET scores. Despite the significant shift, there remains a glaring lack of awareness among students and parents regarding the CET. Dr. Deshmukh emphasized the importance of student participation in the CET to ensure smooth admissions.
Expressing similar sentiments, career guide Vivek Velankar stressed the necessity of extending the registration deadline to accommodate students and parents who require additional time to familiarize themselves with the CET process. He suggested that offering a supplementary CET after the 12th exams could facilitate broader participation and alleviate concerns regarding limited awareness.
Commissioner of the CET Cell, Mahendra Varbhuvan, emphasized the need for proactive engagement and encouraged students to regularly visit the CET website for comprehensive information and updates. As efforts intensify to promote the CET through various media channels, Varbhuvan assured that if the response rate remains low, authorities would consider extending the application deadline to ensure equitable access to the admissions process.
