Maharashtra Plans Free Higher Education for Girls, Says Chandrakant Patil in Pune
Pune, 21st April 2026: Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister on Monday said the state government is working on a proposal to make higher education completely free for girls. He made the statement while addressing a programme in Pune.
Patil clarified that the proposal is still under consideration and no final decision has been taken. He said the government aims to eliminate all remaining financial barriers faced by female students pursuing higher education.
According to the minister, although several schemes already provide relief in tuition and examination fees, students continue to bear other institutional charges. The proposed plan seeks to cover these additional costs, ensuring that girls can access education without financial constraints.
He added that the initiative could improve enrolment and retention of girls in colleges and professional courses across the state. The government is currently examining ways to implement the proposal effectively and ensure that institutions do not impose indirect charges.
Officials indicated that detailed guidelines and a policy framework will be prepared if the proposal is approved.
If implemented, the move is expected to benefit a large number of students and strengthen efforts to promote equitable access to higher education.
