Mumbai, 2nd June 2025: The Maharashtra State School Education Department has officially announced the holiday calendar and academic schedule for the 2025–26 school year. This year, students and teachers in government schools across the state will enjoy a total of 129 holidays, while schools will function for 236 working days.

The academic session will begin on June 16, 2025 for most government schools throughout Maharashtra. However, schools in the Vidarbha region will start classes a week later, from June 23, 2025. This schedule was finalized after consultations with various teachers’ associations, according to officials from the education department.

The number of holidays this year is slightly higher by one day compared to previous years, mainly because the calendar includes 53 Sundays, all of which are designated as holidays. The total count of 129 holidays comprises public holidays as well as planned vacations.

Earlier in February, Education Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh had confirmed the June 16 start date for the academic year. This announcement ended speculation around a possible early start from April 1, a move that was considered to synchronize Maharashtra’s academic calendar with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) system, which follows an April-to-March schedule as per the State Curriculum Framework (SCF-SE).

Although the School Education Minister, Pankaj Bhoir, had suggested the potential shift to an April start for the 2025–26 academic year, this proposal faced strong opposition from teacher unions. Educators argued that the traditional schedule, which aligns better with Maharashtra’s unique cultural, social, and climatic patterns, is more beneficial for students.

Taking these concerns into account, the state government has decided to maintain the existing academic calendar, beginning in June. This decision is expected to ensure stability for schools and meet the preferences of teachers, parents, and students alike.
