Maharashtra to Launch 73 Disability Rehabilitation Centres Under Namo Divyang Shakti Abhiyan

Mumbai, 4th February 2025: The Maharashtra State Government is set to establish 73 Disability Rehabilitation Centres across the state as part of the Namo Divyang Shakti Abhiyan. Each district will have two centres, aimed at providing essential facilities and assistance to persons with disabilities.
These centres, operating under a Central Government scheme, will offer a wide range of services, including therapy, surveys, counselling for various schemes, awareness programs, and early intervention camps. They will also provide assistive devices, surgical facilities with the help of government and charitable institutions, and various training programs.
The Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities will oversee and monitor these district-level rehabilitation centres. District Social Welfare Officers are tasked with compiling a list of voluntary organisations registered under the National Trust and those with registration certificates for initiatives under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016. The Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities must scrutinise the organisations’ documents and work in the disability sector, then submit a list of two organisations per district to the government within 10 days.
These centres will focus on providing basic treatment, necessary surgeries, and access to equipment and assistive devices for the rehabilitation and social security of persons with disabilities. The initiative will prioritise surveying and identifying persons with disabilities, providing certificates, transport and railway passes, and other facilities, as well as offering technical and vocational training and assistance in setting up businesses.
Monthly reports on the camps and various facilities provided through the rehabilitation centres must be submitted to the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities by the 15th of each month. The Commissioner’s office is required to submit a detailed report on the initiative to the government every three months.
