Maharashtra to Roll Out Revised School Curriculum Integrating NCERT and State Syllabi from June 2025

Pune, 17th April 2025: Starting from the academic year 2025-26, government schools across Maharashtra will adopt a new curriculum for Class I students, featuring a blend of NCERT and state board content. The curriculum will be available in Marathi, Hindi, and English mediums.
The updated framework is part of the phased implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been tasked with designing the academic timetable and assessment methods to be uniformly followed by all state-run schools.
In an official notification, Tushar Mahajan, Deputy Secretary in the Maharashtra School Education Department, stated, “The National Education Policy replaces the traditional 10+2+3 system with a new 5+3+3+4 structure, covering education from foundational to undergraduate levels. This reform focuses on five core principles—access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability—and aligns with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Maharashtra will implement the changes in a phased manner.”
To oversee the transition and ensure effective rollout, the state government constituted a high-level steering committee led by the School Education Minister. The committee was formed through a government resolution dated May 24, 2023.
Education experts and teacher representatives have welcomed the move. Nitin Memane, Vice-President of the Pune Teachers’ Association, said that using NCERT books has proven beneficial for students preparing for national-level entrance exams such as NEET, JEE, and competitive exams conducted by the UPSC and other commissions.
“Parents, especially in rural regions, have long been advocating for access to higher-quality educational resources,” Memane added. “This step will significantly improve the learning experience for students in government schools, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds.”
