Maharashtra Universities Will No Longer Have Convocation Ceremonies, Students Upset
Pune, 29th March 2023: State institutions will stop hosting convocation ceremonies for awarding graduate and post-graduate degrees to students as of the following academic year. These ceremonies will no longer be held since so much money is being spent on them, according to the state department of higher and technical education. Yet, because they will no longer be able to enjoy their special day, pupils are upset.
State universities have retained the time-honoured custom of holding convocation ceremonies twice a year, during which degrees are conferred to graduating students and gold medals are given to the top students by notable educators invited to attend as special guests. According to state higher and technical education department officials, significant sums of money are spent on these convocation celebrations, yet students who have already graduated and want their degree certificates afterwards must go through a drawn-out application process. The state administration plans to stop convocation ceremonies early by posting all student degree certificates on the DigiLocker platform, where they may quickly finish their online process and download the appropriate degree certificates.
To provide students with “uniform” diplomas and to have a single large day of festivities throughout the state, the state government of Maharashtra decided to have state universities throughout the state hold their convocation ceremonies on the same day last year. Given the dates of their tests and the announcement of results, several universities could not implement the choice.
Students from state universities, including the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), where graduation day is a joyful opportunity to wear black gowns and graduation hats and take photos with the historic SPPU main building as a backdrop, have not taken the decision well.
