Man arrested for sexually harassing woman by pretending as Army Jawan in Pune

Pune, 29th November 2021: A woman was sexually harassed by a man whom she met on a matrimonial site. The man pretended to be an Army Jawan and met the woman at Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati mandir in the city.

Police arrested the man identified as Prashant Bhaurao Patil (31) of Belgaum. Five cases of fraud are registered against him in Pune, Ahmadnagar and Latur.

According to the police, the woman came in to contact with Prashant on a matrimonial site after contacting the woman several times, he asked her to meet at Dagdushet Halwai Ganpati Temple. There he pretended that he is an Army Jawan and need to go on duty. He also brought the woman to a lodge near Navle bridge citing that he needs to change. There he emotionally blackmailed the woman and had a physical relationship with her.

Later he dropped her at Shaniwarwada. After that when the woman tried to contact him, she realised that her number was blocked by the accused. The woman complained about it to Sinhgad Police station.

Knowing about the incident senior police inspector Devidas Gheware and police inspector Pramod Waghmare instructed the team to investigate. Accordingly, the Sub-Inspector Kuldip Sankapal, policemen Ujwal Mokashi and Shankar Kumbhar traced the accused through technical analysis and went to Ahmednagar.

There they searched for the accused and took him into custody. During the interrogation, he said that he has not been on duty since 2018 after enlisting in the army. Apart from that, from 2018 to November 2021, he confessed to committing 5 crimes of fraud in Pune, Nagar, Latur.

A judicial magistrate has remanded the accused in police custody till December 1.
