Pune, 16th November 2023: Pune District is currently witnessing a surge in major construction projects, contributing to a concerning rise in air pollution. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued explicit instructions to construction professionals, emphasizing the need for adequate measures to mitigate environmental impact. In response to reported lapses in compliance at the Swargate Metro hub construction site, Mahametro, the overseeing authority, has issued a stern warning to senior officials.

Specifically, Mahametro has directed the installation of 25 feet sheets and green nets at the work site within the next two to three days. Failure to adhere to these measures, as outlined by the MPCB may result in a halt to ongoing construction activities. This action comes in light of increasing air pollution in Pune, causing respiratory issues among citizens. The rise in pollution is attributed to factors such as vehicular emissions and dust particles, particularly noticeable during the winter season.

The gravity of the situation has prompted intervention at the governmental level, with the central government issuing orders and guidelines to all state governments to address and prevent air pollution. The Maharashtra government, in turn, mandated the implementation of these measures and guidelines, with the Pune Municipal Corporation actively monitoring compliance. Notices have been sent to construction businesses and projects, seeking information on the adherence to prescribed instructions at their respective sites.

Meanwhile, significant construction efforts are underway in the city, encompassing phases one, two, and three. The construction of the Pimpri to Swargate Metro, a crucial phase under the first stage, includes the development of a metro hub at Swargate, alongside the construction of a multi-storied commercial building at the metro station. The bustling Jedhe Chowk, housing PMPML and ST stations, witnesses a daily influx of over a lakh citizens, contributing to the urgency of addressing pollution concerns.

Notably, the Swargate metro hub location, which houses an Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) Plant for construction, has been flagged for non-compliance with environmental measures. Despite the installation of high letters at the work site, the absence of green nets has raised concerns. In response to a complaint lodged with PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar, immediate action has been mandated. Senior officials of the Metro have been instructed to install letters and green nets promptly, with a strict warning that failure to do so within the stipulated two to three days may result in a suspension of metro construction activities.
