MI And Pune Police Nab Autorickshaw Driver Who Impersonated As Colonel To Cheat Army Aspirants

Pune, 10th August 2022: An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for deceiving aspirants for army recruitment by telling them that he is serving as a Colonel in the Indian Army. An FIR was registered against him by Pathankot police.

In a joint operation, Military Intelligence (MI) unit of Army’s Southern Command and Pune Police’s Crime Branch Unit 4 nabbed the accused from Bopodi on August 9 (Tuesday). The accused has been identified as Sanjay Raghunath Sawant (55), a resident of Bopodi, Pune.

According to police, Sawant cheated many candidates and their parents by taking lakhs of rupees by promising to help them to get army jobs in Pathankot. A case was registered after this incident came to light. Police have already arrested two accused in the case.

Police said that Sawant used to work as labourer at the Dehu ordnance depot. He retired from there two years and since then he has been driving autorickshaw in Pimple Gurav area. In the last one week, police and Army team screened over 200 autorickshaw drivers to trace him.

A team of Pathankot Police arrived in Pune to take him into custody. He was produced before a judicial magistrate court which remanded him to transit remand for taking him to Pathankot.

The Crime Branch team which nabbed the accused included Police Inspector Jayant Rajurkar, API Vikas Jadhav, Policemen Rajas Shaikh, Sanjay Adhari and Pravin Bhalchim.
