MMRDA Announces Rs 1,102 Crore Elevated Corridor Project for Mumbai-Pune Traffic Relief

Mumbai/Pune, 17th February 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion between Mumbai and Pune. The Rs 1,102.75 crore project involves the construction of two elevated corridors that will connect the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee revealed that the project, expected to be completed by February 2027, will significantly benefit commuters travelling between the two cities. The project includes two key components:
1. A 4,958-meter elevated corridor linking Chirle on the MTHL to Gavan Phata
2. A 1,700-meter elevated corridor connecting Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway
Both corridors will have six lanes each, enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion. The project also encompasses the reconstruction of service roads along National Highway 348 between Chirle and Gavan Phata, as well as the widening of the old Pune-Mumbai National Highway 48 in Raigad district.
Dr. Mukherjee emphasized that this project will transform how people and businesses move between Mumbai and Pune. He stated, “By directly connecting Atal Setu to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, we will alleviate traffic congestion at crucial points, particularly on National Highway 348.”
The MMRDA commissioner highlighted the project’s potential to improve the quality of life for commuters, suggesting that it could enable more people to live in Pune while working in Mumbai, thus expanding job opportunities and enhancing living standards.
