Pune, 2nd June 2025: Maharashtra witnessed an unusually early onset of the monsoon this year, with parts of the state receiving heavy rainfall as early as May—a phenomenon not seen in nearly 35 years. However, the monsoon has yet to fully establish across Maharashtra, with rainfall intensity easing during the first days of June.

Meteorologist S.D. Sanap of the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) stated that the monsoon is expected to become active again after June 10, with the second week likely to see rainfall spread across all regions of the state.

Sanap noted a temporary slowdown in monsoon winds over the next four to five days, which could result in below-average rainfall, particularly affecting central Maharashtra, Konkan, and Vidarbha. Despite this, scattered showers accompanied by thunder are forecasted for parts of central Maharashtra on June 4 and 5.

From mid-June onwards, the monsoon is predicted to regain momentum, bringing much-needed rain to areas still awaiting the full onset.

Reflecting on May’s rainfall, Sanap highlighted that while the average monthly expectation was around 14.4 mm, Maharashtra recorded a staggering 159.6 mm—nearly 10 to 11 times higher than usual.

Many farmers in the state are yet to begin sowing their crops. The Weather Department has advised caution, urging farmers to delay planting until soil moisture conditions stabilize and to follow guidance from agricultural authorities, especially in regions affected by heavy rains, to minimize the risk of crop damage.
