Monsoon Set to Resume Its Northward March After Two-Week Lull: IMD

Pune, 11th June 2025: After remaining stagnant for nearly two weeks, the southwest monsoon is now expected to regain momentum and advance further across India, according to updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Since May 29, the monsoon had paused its progress, remaining stalled over Mumbai in the west and Sikkim–Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in the east. However, meteorologists are optimistic that evolving weather systems in the Bay of Bengal will help reignite the monsoon’s advance over central and eastern India by June 14.
He also noted that a second cyclonic system is expected to develop around June 14 over the north Bay of Bengal. This system may sweep across Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, energizing the monsoon’s northward push and bringing rainfall to new regions.
An IMD official, echoing this assessment, said that favorable atmospheric conditions are likely to aid monsoon progression across the central belt around mid-June. However, confirmation of the second system is still awaited.
“There is already a cyclonic circulation over north Odisha and nearby areas, which is strengthening monsoon winds. From June 12, we expect moderate to heavy showers in South Maharashtra, eventually expanding to other parts of the state,” the IMD official stated.
Meanwhile, heatwave conditions persist across north and northwest India, including north Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR, and parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, according to IMD’s latest bulletin.
Relief, however, is in sight.
“A gradual decline in temperatures is expected from June 13 onward in northwest India as monsoon winds gain strength,” the IMD official added.
He further pointed out that an east-west trough extending from north Tamil Nadu to the south Maharashtra coast indicates an uptick in monsoon momentum. Kerala and Karnataka, which are already experiencing active monsoon phases, will continue to receive rainfall.
While there was no monsoon advancement recorded on June 10, meteorologists believe the conditions are now aligning for a renewed monsoon surge from June 14, bringing relief to parched regions and disrupting persistent heatwave patterns across the subcontinent.
