Pune, 10th December 2021: Although the Mula-Mutha river improvement project in Pune has been delayed, it will be completed soon. Pune MP Girish Bapat has made it clear that any funds received for this will not go back to the Centre.

MP Bapat had a meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today. Bapat said that Shekhawat had directed the authorities to issue a work order for the project within a month.

The deadline for the completion of this important project for the people of Pune expires next month. The project was to be completed by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) by 31st January 2022. But the civic body is still stuck in the tender process. Therefore, the project cannot be completed on the scheduled date.

MP Bapat had earlier also met Shekhawat several times to discuss the issue. Even today, a meeting was held between Shekhawat and Bapat with the concerned officials.

MP Bapat along with National River Conservation Directorate Project Director RR Mishra, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) chief Saito Mitsunori and Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar were present in the meeting alongwith other officials.

Bapat said that this project is important for the people of Pune and urged them to immediately take possession of the land required for this project and start work.

Even if the project is not completed, it will get an extension. Therefore, the funds for this project will not be taken back by the Center, testified Shekhawat.

It was believed that the PMC had to release water on the Rs 850 crore fund received from JICA for this project. But today’s meeting between Shekhawat and Bapat has sealed the completion of the project without any return of funds. The meeting also made it clear that work on the project would begin within a month.

Now the municipal administration has to complete all the government processes expeditiously.

A tripartite agreement was signed between the Pune Municipal Corporation, the Central Government and JICA in February 2015. According to this, PMC will get Rs 861 crore ie 85 per cent of the planned expenditure of Rs 990 crore for the project to treat 100% of the city’s sewage water. Under this project, sewage water treatment plants will be set up at eleven places in the city. But out of the 11 sites required for the project, five are not in the possession of the Municipal Corporation. The tender process of the corporation is also stalled.
