Mumbai, 15th December 2023: In a recent announcement, the Mumbai Indians revealed that Hardik Pandya will assume the captaincy for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Hardik takes over from Rohit Sharma, who led the franchise to five IPL titles. This change in leadership follows Hardik’s return to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans last month, marking a high-profile trade ahead of the December 19 auction. Mumbai Indians expressed that the leadership shift is part of their future planning and acknowledged Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.

Mumbai Indians, sharing the record for the most successful IPL franchise with Chennai Super Kings, both having won five titles each, made the announcement. Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance for Mumbai Indians, commented on Hardik’s appointment, stating, “It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready.”

Rohit Sharma, who recently captained India to the ODI World Cup final, had been leading Mumbai Indians since 2013, securing five IPL trophies in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Expressing gratitude for Rohit’s exceptional leadership, Mumbai Indians acknowledged his role in the team’s success and welcomed Hardik Pandya as the new captain.

Hardik Pandya had previously contributed significantly to Mumbai Indians’ success between 2015 and 2021 before captaining Gujarat Titans. Under his leadership, the Titans won the IPL title in 2022 and secured a runners-up finish earlier this year.

The development also raises questions about Rohit’s future in the shortest format, considering his recent heartbreak in the ODI World Cup. While another ODI World Cup appearance seems unlikely, Rohit could potentially lead India in the T20 World Cup in six months. The announcement adds intrigue to the T20 format, especially given that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not played for India in the T20 since the semifinal exit at the World Cup in Australia last year.
