New Pune Airport Terminal Set for Inauguration, Cab ‘Pickup’ Denied, Raises Passenger Concerns
Viman Nagar, 15th January 2024: The upcoming inauguration of Pune Airport’s new terminal, scheduled within the next two to three weeks, brings both anticipation and concerns for passengers. While the facility promises international standards, the airport administration’s decision to deny ‘pickup’ permissions to taxis has sparked inconvenience for travelers.
The new terminal, equipped with three gates each for arrival and departure, aims to alleviate the crowd congestion experienced in the older facility. However, the restriction on taxi ‘pickup’ poses a challenge for passengers seeking transportation from the Aeromall to their final destinations.
Private vehicles are permitted for ‘drop and pickup,’ ensuring ease for passengers opting for personal transportation. However, the denial of ‘pickup’ permissions for taxis is a notable deviation from the existing system.
The current terminal features a pedestrian bridge connecting it to the Aeromall, with escalators and elevators for passenger convenience. However, due to the considerable distance between the new terminal and Aeromall, constructing a similar pedestrian bridge has proven logistically challenging for the airport administration.
Passengers arriving at the new terminal will have to navigate their luggage to the mall, adding an element of inconvenience for those expecting seamless transportation options. Airport Director Santosh Dhoke clarified that allowing taxi ‘pickup’ would lead to overcrowding in the terminal premises, necessitating the denial of permission. Private vehicles remain unaffected by these restrictions.
Critics argue that these limitations should have been anticipated during the terminal’s planning phase. Civil aviation analyst Dhairyashil Vandekar expressed concern over the inconvenience posed to travelers and speculated that future developments, such as the arrival of the metro, might exacerbate challenges in the airport area.
As the city eagerly awaits the inauguration of the new terminal, discussions about optimizing transportation facilities and addressing passenger concerns have become central to the ongoing dialogue between the airport administration and stakeholders.
