Nigdi: Elderly woman assaulted at home, robbed of cash and ornaments

Pimpri Chinchwad, August 12, 2020: A 76-year-old woman was robbed of gold and silver jewellery and Rs 50,000 in cash by two robbers who threatened to kill her by entering into her house on Monday night in Nigdi Pradhikaran. The woman had valiantly resisted the attack and has sustained injuries on her hands.

Based on a complaint from Hemlata Patil of Nigdi Pradhikaran, an FIR has been registered with Nigdi police station against the two robbers for looting cash and ornaments, totally worth Rs 4.3 lakh. Police are yet to identify them.

According to police, Hemlata lives alone in a flat on the first floor of the Gayatri Heritage Society. Her husband passed away a few months ago. At around 11 pm on Monday, two thieves came in through the back gate and attacked the elderly woman with a knife and stick. She resisted the assault but sustained injuries on her hand. After the robbers left, she called her daughter who lives nearby. She came immediately and rushed her to a hospital. The senior citizen lodged a complaint on Tuesday after being discharged from hospital.

Senior Police Inspector Ganesh Jawadwad, in-charge of Nigdi police station, said that the elderly woman was watching television when the robbers entered the flat through the back-gate from the garden side. They had scaled the compound wall. There is no CCTV camera or security guard in the housing society. The robbers attacked her with a stick and robbed the ornaments she was wearing. After that, they searched the cupboards and took away cash, ornaments, mobile phone and wristwatch.

ACP Ram Jadhav said that three teams have been formed to identify and nab the robbers. The Crime Branch is also conducting investigations.
