Mumbai, 23rd June 2021: Nirav Modi, a fugitive diamond trader in the Punjab National Bank scam and money laundering case, has now been dealt a severe blow by a British court. His plea against extradition to India was rejected by the British court. The court ruled that there was no basis for the petition.

In collusion with Punjab National Bank officials, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi misappropriated Rs 14,000 crores. The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had registered cases against Nirav Modi in this regard.

At a local court in Britain, the case had been pending before Samuel Guzzi for two years. Justice Guzzi had also explained that for the ongoing trial in India, Nirav will have to appear there.

The British court had also rejected the claim that the case against Nirav would not be heard impartially in Indian courts. Moreover, the court also rejected Nirav’s claim that his medical needs would not be met in India. At first glance, there is evidence against Nirav Modi in this case, Guzi had explained.

According to the UK Extradition Act 2003, the judge had sent a report of his verdict to the Home Minister. Home Minister Preeti Patel has finally approved the extradition, according to Indian diplomats in Britain. Scotland Yard police arrested Nirav on March 13, 2019. He has been in Wandsworth Prison ever since.
