Mumbai, 7th July 2023: The State Election Commissioner has clarified that no official announcement has been made for the schedule of the local body elections in Maharashtra. The Supreme Court has issued a status quo order on the local body elections matter except for the gram panchayats in Maharashtra hence there is no question of announcing the election, said U P S Madan, State Election Commissioner of Maharashtra.

He also said that separate voter lists are not prepared for the local body elections and the voter lists prepared for the state assembly elections are only used and they are divided into wards. For the upcoming possible general and bypoll elections of local bodies, a specific date (cut-off date) is fixed for the utilization of voter lists of the Assembly constituencies.

The notification regarding setting the cut-off date as 1st July 2023 for these upcoming general and bypoll elections has been issued on 5th July 2023.

The cut-off date is fixed from time to time for using the updated voter lists of the assembly constituencies for the elections to the local bodies and the notification in this regard is also published. Notifications of this nature have also been published earlier. This notification is not an actual election programme. If the general or by-elections are not held within the period mentioned in the notification, a notification is issued to fix the cut-off date again, U P S Madan said.
