Pune 19th Sept 2023: As the city is celebrating ganesh festival, the citizens are also hoping for good rain as it is witnessed during the ten days of the festival every year. However, the forecast predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) does not show any sign of heavy rain in the district for the next four to five days.

Pune and many other districts in Maharashtra have received less rainfall this year and the average rainfall was also reported to be less than normal in most of the districts. As the monsoon season is slowly moving towards the end, people are hoping to witness a good spell of rain during the ten days of the ganesh festival as heavy rain is reported during this period every year. According to IMD, the district is likely to witness ‘light rain or thundershowers’ between September 20 and 23. There are no alerts of heavy rain issued by IMD for the district.

The situation is not different in other districts of the state as IMD has predicted has issued yellow alerts for heavy rain to only some districts such as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Jalna, Nashik and some districts of Vidarbha region. The districts in Western Maharashtra are likely to witness less or no rainfall during this period.

The water levels in the dams that supply water to Pune and adjoining areas have also reduced and store less water compared to last year. According to the official data shared by the irrigation department, the accumulative storage in the four dams of Khadakwasla cluster was reported at 93.63% (27.29 TMC) compared to 100% (29.15) TMC reported on the same day last year.
