Noida, 20th January 2026: While returning home from office, Mehta’s vehicle slipped into the flooded basement and began sinking rapidly. A delivery agent who witnessed the incident tied himself to a rope and attempted to rescue him, but the attempt failed.
According to officials, dense winter fog severely slowed down visibility and delayed rescue efforts. Firefighters and rescue teams arranged ladders and ropes, but the ropes were not long enough to reach him. Yuvraj reportedly struggled for almost 90 minutes before collapsing. Doctors later confirmed that his lungs and nasal cavity were filled with mud, causing death by asphyxiation.
Yesterday, on 19 January, Yuvraj Mehta was returning home from office when his car plunged into an under-construction basement filled with muddy water. The pit had accumulated water not just from rainfall but also from discharge from nearby residential drains. Yuvraj managed to escape the vehicle and climb onto its roof. He called his father for help, telling him, “I don’t want to die.” His father immediately alerted the police.
Yuvraj waited in the dark, foggy night, shouting for help as the vehicle continued sinking into the swamp-like pit. Rescuers reached the spot around 4:00 a.m., although the police were alerted at 12:06 a.m. Police and firefighters arrived first, but the dense fog undermined the rescue operation. Officials said both firefighting and police rescue teams are stationed in Ghaziabad, as are the specialised forces. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived at 3:45 a.m., and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached at 4:15 a.m.
Residents have alleged negligence on the part of authorities, stating that the basement had no barricades, signage, or warning systems despite being under construction. The incident has raised serious questions over civic responsibility, delayed emergency response, and lack of safety measures in the area.
