Pune, May 9 : After searching for five months, sleuths from the anti-extortion cell of Pune city police crime branch nabbed notorious goon Bapu Nayyar in Noida on Sunday night. He was brought to Pune on Monday.

Last month a special court had declared Nayyar and his accomplice Nilesh Baswant as proclaimed offenders after they failed to appear before the court even after sending repeated summons.

Earlier, arrest warrants were issued but the police could not trace them. The duo is booked in a case registered with the Kondhwa police station for allegedly trying to extort Rs 6 lakh from a man after grabbing his 14-guntha land at Kondhwa Budruk.

Nilesh Botra, 39, a resident of Parvati, had filed an FIR in December 2015, with the Kondhwa police against Nayyar, Nilesh Baswant, Deepak Krishna Kadam and Amol Baswant, all residents of Indiranagar in Bibwewadi.

According to the complaint, Botra’s wife and her sister own a land at Survey number 66 in Kondhwa Budruk. However, the accused tried to grab the land. Nayyar threatened him not to lay a foot on the plot till he gave him the papers. Baswant demanded Rs 6 lakh to vacate the land and threatened to kill the complainant.

“They began abusing us. The cops reached the spot and nabbed Kadam while the others escaped,” Botra recalled. The accused have been absconding ever since.

On May 7, Police Inspector Anil Patil, in-charge of anti-extortion cell, received information that Nayyar is hiding in a bungalow in sector 20 in Noida. Accordingly a team went there and arrested him with the help of Noida police.

He was produced before a magistrate who granted his transit remand on Monday. The team took a flight and reached Pune police commissioner office on Monday night.

DCP (crime) P R Patil supervised the investigation team which included API Shelar, and policemen Prashant Pawar, Pramod Magar, and Nilesh Desai.
