Pune, 7th December 2021: Citizens will now have to dial 112 instead of 100 for police help. The new helpline has been started on an experimental basis in Pune Police Commissionerate from September 2021.
Accordingly, 300 to 350 phone calls of citizens are being received every day. Phone calls made on 100 have also been diverted to 112 numbers. Central Control Rooms in Mumbai and Nagpur are forwarding the calls to respective police units, informed Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Jalindar Supekar.
Phone calls to 100 numbers were being received at police control rooms in various parts of the state. However, in some places, it was not possible for the police to respond immediately to the emergency services. The location of the callers, the information was being obstructed due to technical glitches.
As a result, it was a challenge for the police to provide timely assistance to the citizens. Against this backdrop, priority was given by the government to provide a single helpline at the state level. The number 112 was fixed to provide other facilities in time including response time. It was decided to send help to the complainant in time.
Officials said that the response to the helpline number 112 in Pune Police Commissionerate has increased.
This is how the 112 helpline started
After the complainant dials 100 or 112, the phone goes to Mumbai or Nagpur central control room. Complainant’s information, location and other incidents are recorded there and phone calls are forwarded to the concerned District Police Control Room or the Police Commissionerate Control Room. Accordingly, the nearest Beat Marshall goes to the spot and helps the caller. Dial 112 in particular provides the location of the complainant. So it is beneficial to help them in time.
