Odisha, 30th April 2026: A tribal man in Odisha’s Keonjhar district dug up his sister’s remains and carried them to a bank after failing to withdraw the roughly Rs 19,000 she had left in her account, an incident that has now gone viral through multiple videos online.

Identified as Jitu Munda, he reportedly walked close to three kilometres with the skeletal remains wrapped in cloth, reaching a local bank branch where he had earlier tried to access the money using her passbook. Bank officials had asked for documentation, primarily a death certificate and legal heir proof, to process the withdrawal, which he did not have at the time.

According to reports, Munda had made multiple visits to the bank but was unable to complete the formalities. With no clarity on the process and mounting frustration, he exhumed his sister’s remains from the burial site and brought them to the bank premises, placing them outside. The visuals, now circulating widely on X, show onlookers gathering as the situation escalated.

There are differing accounts over what exactly was communicated to him. While some local reports suggest he believed physical proof of death was required, bank officials later stated that only documents were asked for and that procedures were not followed due to a lack of awareness.

Police reached the spot soon after the incident, persuaded him to return the remains, and coordinated with local authorities to resolve the matter. The required certificates were later issued, and the bank released approximately Rs 19,400, including interest, to the family.
