Planning for IIT JEE After Class 10? Learn 15 Essential Do’s and Don’ts to Start Early, Build Strong Concepts, and Stay Ahead
Pune, 10th October 2025: Every year, around 15 lakh students appear for the IIT JEE Main examination, the gateway to India’s premier engineering institutes. Yet, despite its popularity, many students and parents still have misconceptions about what it truly takes to crack IIT JEE.
Interestingly with just about 35% marks in JEE Advanced, a student can earn a seat in an IIT. Out of the 15 lakh aspirants, nearly five lakh end up with negative scores in JEE Main, while only around two lakh prepare strategically, studying conceptually, practising regularly, and maintaining discipline under the right guidance.
Among these top two lakh students, only about 25,000 finally make it to the IITs. What sets them apart is their mindset. They stay calm when challenges arise and grow under continuous mentoring from a stable team of teachers who understand their learning patterns and guide them at every stage. Frequent faculty changes, on the other hand, often disrupt a student’s connection with mentors. The remaining 1.75 lakh students go on to secure top seats in reputed colleges such as COEP and NITs.
Many students don’t realise that the syllabus of Classes 11 and 12 overlaps almost entirely with JEE and CET. A lot of valuable time is wasted debating whether to prepare for JEE, CET, or BITS. Instead, students should focus on strengthening their fundamentals in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. If everything falls into place, they get in to IIT or else top institutes like COEP or NIT act as strong safety nets. Interestingly, students who aim only for CET often get outperformed by sincere JEE aspirants who narrowly miss IIT but still have far stronger conceptual command. There are around 1.75 lakh such students every year.
Here are some simple Do’s and Don’ts that every Class 10 student aiming for IIT should follow:
1. Choose your coaching institute wisely. Look for experienced faculty who stay with the same batch for the full two years. A stable team understands your learning pattern and helps you improve consistently.
2. Check the success ratio, not the total results. Many big institutes display flashy ads and long lists of IIT JEE toppers showing how many made it, but what they hide is how many didn’t. Two hundred IIT JEE ranks out of 5,000 students (4%) may look impressive, but 60 out of 200 (30%) is a far better success rate.
3. Talk to unbiased seniors to get real insights on teaching quality, faculty stability, support, and the classroom environment. Ask if the same teachers taught them throughout, how many students were in the batch, and how many actually cleared JEE Advanced.
4. Don’t get carried away by heavy discounts or big advertisements. Marketing strength and teaching quality are completely different aspects.
5. Take regular mock tests and assignments. They build exam stamina and help you identify weak areas early.
6. Revise concepts the same day they’re taught. Regular revision keeps fundamentals strong and prevents last-minute stress.
7. Ask doubts immediately in class. A single uncleared doubt can make the entire chapter confusing later.
8. Parents should encourage curiosity instead of focusing only on marks. Let children enjoy the subjects; real learning happens when they find it interesting.
9. Focus on your 10th board exams but spend one or two hours a week till November to get familiar with JEE-style questions. It helps in conditioning the mind early.
10. Don’t skip lectures. Missing even one can make the next topics difficult to follow and disrupt your preparation.
11. Don’t panic if your mock test scores are low or a topic feels tough. Stay calm and speak to your mentors; personal guidance helps more than watching random online videos.
12. Don’t take long breaks after board exams. One week of rest is enough before resuming preparation to maintain your study rhythm.
13. Avoid distractions and non-serious friends who may divert your focus. Company matters more than most students realise.
14. Stay away from video games and social media. Use short breaks for yoga, jogging, or quick physical activities like push ups, pull ups, rope skipping etc to refresh your mind.
15. Don’t compromise on sleep. Seven to eight hours of rest every night keeps your mind sharp, alert, and ready to perform at its best.
