PMC Needs 20.34 TMC Of Water For Pune City

Pune, 20th September 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now requested the Water Resources Department to officially provide 20.34 TMC of water for the city.
PMC has been sanctioned 11.30 TMC of water by the Water Resources Department in 2002-03 to quench the thirst of the city. After that, this quota has not increased in comparison to the population growth in the last 10 years.
A total of 14.61 TMC of water is being supplied to the city by the Water Resources Department. Apart from this, the municipality is taking approximately 20 TMC of water annually from the Khadakwasla Dam chain, Bhama Askhed Dam, and Pawana Dam. A total of 18.25 TMC of water is being withdrawn from the Khadakwasla dam chain alone. The dispute between the Municipal Corporation and the water resources has been in the news as they are taking seven TMCs of water more than the sanctioned quota.
As more water is needed to quench the thirst of a growing city, political interference has always overshadowed this debate. The Municipal Corporation has now officially demanded 20.34 TMC water from the Khadakwasla dam chain.
The current population of Pune city is more than 55 lakhs. According to the 2011 census, the population of Pune city was 32 lakh. Even then, the municipal corporation was not meeting the water quota approved for the city. 34 new villages have been included in the city. The migrant population is also increasing in the city every year. Due to the increasing expansion of the city and the included villages, the population of the city has crossed 55 lakhs.
Therefore, the Municipal Corporation has asked for 20.34 TMC of water. The water resources department and the state government are paying attention to what decision the state government will take on this.
