PMC’s Rs 500 Crore Traffic Plan: 100 Days to Fix Bottlenecks and Missing Road Links In Pune
Pune, 1st February 2025: In a bid to ease traffic congestion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to urgently remove 14 missing road links and clear eight major bottlenecks at 47 locations across the city. A joint meeting between the PMC and the police is scheduled in the next two days to finalize the action plan. Additionally, 17 roads, along with 15 designated “ideal roads,” will be asphalted, widened, and cleared of encroachments obstructing traffic.
Traffic congestion in Pune has been worsening, and long-term solutions often require extensive approvals, funding, and time. To address this, Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the PMC, Pune Police, and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to collaborate and implement quick, cost-effective measures within 100 days.
The PMC’s development plan includes the construction of new roads and widening of existing ones. However, due to incomplete road networks, connectivity issues persist, leading to severe traffic jams. A survey conducted under the city’s Missing Link Project identified 30 crucial missing links contributing to the congestion. Furthermore, 47 locations have been marked as bottlenecks that exacerbate traffic flow problems.
Clearing these missing links and bottlenecks will require an estimated ₹500 crore. While the PMC has approached the state government for funds, the request is yet to be approved. During a District Planning Committee meeting held on Thursday, PMC and the Traffic Police presented a detailed report on traffic solutions. Pawar assured that government funds would be allocated on priority and instructed officials to commence feasible roadwork immediately, ensuring completion within 100 days.
